Uses of CBD in one of the most discussed topic theses days. Cannabidiol or CBD is a cannabinoid. Cannabinoids affect the body’s eocrinoid system to regulate mood, anxiety, and appetite.1 CBD comes from Cannabis plants (ex. Cannabis Indica or Cannabis sativa). CBD found in hemp (Cannabis Ruderalis) is more common. CBD is then blended with carrier oils to make CBD oil.
The other main component of Cannabis indica and Cannabis sativa species–but not typically Cannabis ruderalis–is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC can induce a sense of euphoria. However, it can also cause paranoia. CBD oil should contain less than 0.3% THC. Therefore, CBD oil should not cause euphoria. Many people assume CBD oil to be safe.
Researchers and consumers alike are interested in CBD products. According to one source, CBD products may earn more than $20B in the US just by 2024.2 CBD is being studied for its effects on seizures, chronic pain and inflammation.
CBD Oil Uses
Supplements should be customized and evaluated by a healthcare professional. No supplement is intended as a treatment, cure, or prevention of disease.
CBD oil supporters claim it has many benefits. CBD has gained popularity and scientists have tried to study it more. However, human trials of CBD oil remain inconclusive.
Here’s an in-depth look at CBD oil’s health benefits.
Seizures
In June 2018, Epidiolex was approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
Epidiolex treats two rare forms in epilepsy. These are Dravet disorder and Lennox/Gastaut syndrome. These rare genetic diseases cause lifelong seizures, usually within the first one year of life. It was approved for tuberous syndrome complex in 2020. Tuberous sclerosis is a rare genetic condition which causes benign tumors of the body to grow. This can often be accompanied by seizures. Epidiolex may be used for any of the above disorders in children one-year-old or older.11 CBD’s effectiveness as a treatment for seizures is unknown. Epidiolex does not clarify whether CBD causes seizures.
You must have a prescription from a doctor to take Epidiolex. CBD products are not subject to regulation or standardization. The benefits of CBD products in treating seizures have been inconsistent.
Anxiety
CBD could help with anxiety disorders13. But, it has not been tested in humans to determine if CBD can relieve anxiety. One study showed that CBD oil was taken by 57 men before they were allowed to speak in public.14 The researchers used blood pressure and heart rates to measure anxiety levels. The Visual Analog Mood Scale (a reliable test for moods) was also used by the researchers. The men who took 300mg CBD oil (mg), reported less anxiety than those who received placebos.
However, men who took 100mg and 600mg CBD oil (mg), did not experience the same results. Because the trial only included men, it was limited in terms of sample size. Therefore, additional data is needed for women to verify that CBD oil has the same impact as CBD. Another placebo-controlled, double-blind study also showed CBD to decrease symptoms in teenage Social Anxiety Disorder.
Addiction
Preliminary results from preliminary studies on uses of CBD impact on addiction are mixed.16 A small, controlled trial in fifty patients with heroin addiction found CBD to be beneficial at 400 and 800mg (mg) levels.17 CBD was used instead of sugar pills. CBD oil is safe and effective for this purpose but more research is needed.
Schizophrenia
A randomized controlled study of 88 people who were already on medication for schizophrenia showed that CBD oil had a significant effect on positive psychotic signs (hallucinations, delusions, etc.). However, CBD oil did not significantly differ from placebo in regards to negative psychotic conditions (like disinterest in others or blunt affect). You should also note that CBD was tested as an additional therapy because people taking schizophrenia medication were already using it. You should be aware that THC-rich products may increase the symptoms of schizophrenia, paranoia, and psychosis.
